Virginia Department of Corrections is a Finalist for COVITS Award – VirginiaCORIS Integrated Offender Drug Testing

Portland, Friday, September 14th, 2012 – Abilis New England congratulates its customer, the Virginia Department of Corrections, for being a finalist for the prestigious COVITS Award (Commonwealth of Virginia’s Innovative Technology Symposium) in the “IT as Efficiency Driver” category.

The Virginia Corrections Information System (VirginiaCORIS) was nominated for its new offender drug testing services module. This year set an all-time record for submissions by a wide margin, and the competition was fierce.

The Department of Corrections (DOC) partnered with the Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) to replace legacy drug testing processes with a standardized and automated process. The new process promotes interoperability across agencies, leverages existing technology, enhances services, and expands information sharing capabilities. Previous processes relied on 23 DOC sites across the Commonwealth to test offenders for drug use. The data entered into these disparate systems was inconsistent, not easily shared across the DOC, and could not be used for trend analysis. The DOC and DCLS collaborated to identify areas of efficiency.

With the new system, samples are collected by the DOC and delivered to the DCLS for analysis. Lab orders are electronically submitted through VirginiaCORIS to the laboratory system at the DCLS. Results are returned electronically to VirginiaCORIS. The DOC is able to analyze data for patterns and trends, and share this information within the organization. This has been an outstanding project and it reflects consistent teamwork between DCLS, DOC and Abilis New England.
